yesterday, i took the TGV train from Paris to Karlsruhe, Germany. it was a three hour ride, which wasn’t so bad, and Wolli was waiting in Karlsruhe when I arrived. it’s been about three years since Wolli was studying at Georgia Tech so needless to say, it’s really awesome to see him again.
he’s letting me stay with him at his flat in Constance (Konstanz) for the remainder of my trip, which helps a lot. Thanks, Wolli!
at any rate, we met up with his friend Dennis in Karlsruhe and checked out the town center as well as this ginormous castle by the university. and then it started to snow! ya, i forgot to take my trusty camera with me.
then we met up with Wolli’s mom in Pforzeim for food at what Wolli calls a ‘traditional’ German restaurant. I cannot for the life of me pronounce what was on the menu, but it was really really tasty. I ordered the duck with a red kraut and these doughy bread balls. It came with a brothy soup with omelet strips and a dessert of this chocolatey mousse which tastes exactly like these cookies that Keith and I love from the Dekalb market. it was heaven. oh zeah and the beer? zum.
man, long day. (ack the z and y keys are swapped on this keyboard) then we went to his mom’s place to have tea and this bread that reminded me of some sort of hybrid between fruitcake (but better) and italian panettone. like a dense panettone. by the way, Wolli’s mom is absolutely awesome.
a couple hours later, we headed back to Wolli’s place in Constance. omg CONSTANCE IS GORGEOUS. fyi, Constance is a town on the Swiss-German border, about 50km, i think, from Zurich.
it was nighttime and it was snowing and gosh. beautiful. Wolli told me a lot about the town’s history, which is both tumultuous and hilarious, but i can get to that later. more pictures to come. more tastiness to come. this is the first time i had a good night’s sleep (on a couch none-the-less) and woke up early around 9:30am. let’s hope today is awesome!!
